We’ve all heard tall tales that have amazed us and many of us have repeated something we’ve later found out wasn’t entirely true. Dentistry isn’t immune to these rampant rumors and falsehoods. You may remember the “flossing isn’t necessary” story that was going around recently that was promptly quieted by the American Dental Association. So on that note, we’ve put together a few dental myths and whether they are dental fact or just plain fiction.
Electric toothbrushes are better: True. If you’ve heard the commercials for electronic toothbrushes, you’ve heard the reasons why they are better according to the creator of the product, but are electric toothbrushes really better? Yes. Of course you still need to brush for the full two minutes twice a day as you would with a regular brush, but studies have shown that electric brushes more efficiently remove plaque.
Tooth Decay is mainly caused by sugar: Mostly False. Sugar does play a role in tooth decay, but it isn’t the primary perpetrator. Plaque buildup results from saliva combining with acids from naturally occurring bacteria in the mouth. This often happens in conjunction with the consumption of carbohydrates (breads, etc).
Whitening Strips don’t work: False While there are some initial drawbacks, like increased sensitivity because they make your teeth more porous, whitening strips can indeed whiten your teeth by a few shades. The sensitivity will eventually wear off as well.
