6 Benefits of Invisalign

Are crooked, gapped, or misaligned teeth affecting your confidence? Invisalign and braces are both effective options for teeth straightening. However, Invisalign clear aligners offer more benefits for teeth straightening than metal braces do. At Lifetime Family Dental, we want you to choose the cosmetic alignment procedure that best fits your needs. Six Benefits of Invisalign Clear Aligners

1: They Can Correct a Variety of Dental Issues

Invisalign treatment involves wearing a series of clear aligner trays that gradually shift your teeth. The aligners can correct more than just crooked teeth. Invisalign treatment may be right for you if you have a mild case of:

  • Overcrowding
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite

Fixing these problems will not only restore your smile but will also benefit your health. For instance, if you have gapped, overcrowded, or crooked teeth you are more vulnerable to gum disease. Correcting issues like an overbite can relieve jaw pain, breathing problems, and tooth decay.

2: Invisalign Requires Fewer Office Visits

While Invisalign treatment typically takes around 12 months, it doesn’t involve many trips to the dentist. You will have to attend an initial consultation to determine whether you are eligible for Invisalign and clear up any questions you may have.

Your next appointment will involve making a map of your mouth with advanced 3-D technology to ensure the clear aligner trays will fit comfortably. From then on, you can switch to new trays at home as directed. You will only have to see your dentist once every four to six weeks for brief appointments to monitor the progress of your treatment.

3: Invisalign Aligners Are More Comfortable Than Braces

Braces are notorious for being uncomfortable throughout treatment and particularly painful after a tightening appointment. Invisalign trays, on the other hand, are virtually painless. You may feel a little discomfort at first when you switch to a new set of trays, but they are far more comfortable than braces.

4: Aligners Don’t Restrict Your Diet

Another way that Invisalign clear aligners differ from braces is that they are completely removable. With traditional braces, you have to avoid certain foods that could get caught in your braces or damage them. If you wear Invisalign, all you have to do is remove and rinse your trays whenever it’s time to eat.

However, your teeth may be sore when you first adjust to your trays so you might want to avoid hard foods during those times. You should also remove your trays when drinking anything other than water to prevent staining or damaging your trays.

5: They Are Virtually Invisible

Because Invisalign trays are clear and fit the natural shape of your mouth, they are barely noticeable on your teeth. Braces often make people want to hide their teeth when they speak or smile. With Invisalign clear aligners, you can smile freely and comfortably.

6: Easy to Clean

Just like your teeth, your Invisalign trays require regular cleaning. Neglecting to clean your clear aligners causes bacteria build-up, making your teeth more vulnerable to tooth decay. Your Invisalign trays could also become discolored if you don’t keep them clean, making your teeth appear stained

Invisalign aligners are easy to care for—all you have to do is:

  • Gently brush your aligners every night with a soft-bristled toothbrush that is separate from the one you use to brush your teeth
  • Use a gentle, clear liquid soap when brushing your trays (soaps with dyes may stain your trays)
  • Thoroughly rinse the trays after brushing
  • Store your trays in a protective container when you aren’t wearing them

Are there any disadvantages of Invisalign?

While there are many benefits of Invisalign, there are a couple of disadvantages as well. Unfortunately, Invisalign does not fix severe cases of crowding, misalignment, gaps, or bite problems. You also need to commit to wearing your Invisalign aligners for 20 to 22 hours every day in order for the treatment to work successfully, which may be difficult for some people. And, when you first begin wearing your trays, you may develop a lisp. However, it should disappear over time as your mouth adjusts to speaking with your clear aligners in place.
