Twice Yearly Cleaning and Exam

cleaning and exam

One of the most important things you can do for your health is to schedule a regular complete dental checkup and cleaning. Given that many people are afraid of going to the dentist, we want you to know that a checkup is the front line in the war against tooth decay. And, at Lifetime Family Dental in Gilbert, we strive to make our patients as relaxed and comfortable as we can. When you come in for your twice yearly cleaning and exam, here’s what you can expect:

Cleaning

Professional cleaning, an important part of oral prophylaxis, will makeup the first part of your visit. Even though you are a twice-a-day, conscientious tooth brusher, plaque and tartar still builds up on your teeth. This buildup can cause oral disease, so it must be removed. You can brush and floss away plaque, but tartar can only be removed with special tools that scale your teeth. Each tooth will be thoroughly cleaned: back, front and sides. The scaling tool is sharp and you may feel the occasional prick on your gums, but will not cause serious pain. If you are extremely sensitive to pain, we offer mild sedation that will help you to relax. Just let us know if you need this service.

Once the plaque and tartar have been removed, your dental hygienist will polish your teeth using a mildly abrasive paste. Polishing helps to remove surface stains on the enamel, leaving you with a brighter smile. Finally, the dental hygienist will floss between your teeth to remove any particles from the cleaning process. The entire cleaning will take about half an hour to an hour, depending on how much tartar has built up. When the cleaning is completed, your dentist will perform the examination.

The exam

Lifetime Family Dental is concerned for your optimal dental health. When you have dental problems, your overall health is at risk. That’s why we stress twice a year examinations. The dental exam will reveal any problems that have developed since your last visit. As with any medical problem, early detection means a greater chance to preserve optimal health. The exam will not only focus on teeth and gums, but will also look at your face, jaw, and neck areas for any signs of disease.

During the examination, our dentists will look for any present or developing cavities. Dental X-rays may be taken to see if there are any cavities between the teeth, or problems below the gum line. Your gums are also checked to see if there are any issues with gingivitis or other periodontal diseases. The dentist will examine your throat and tongue for swelling or redness that may be a sign of a more serious disease such as cancer or diabetes.

If the visual exam or the X-rays reveal the presence of cavities, we will drill and fill either during your visit or within a few days. If there are other serious problems, like a developing abscess or a cracked tooth, we will schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor or repair the problem. For more complex problems like advanced TMJ, we will recommend a specialist such as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, or an orthodontist.

We will also ask about your general health and if you are experiencing any problems. Many health problems point back to oral health. We want to maintain a complete and ongoing history of your physical health so we can have early detection of disease.
